Emma

22 years, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences

Why Rotterdam?

"When I started my studies, it was still corona time and I didn't have to be in school much. So I looked at a study that was easy to travel to from my parents. But I soon moved to Rotterdam anyway, and I haven't regretted that for a moment! Some people think this city is ugly, but I like the modern, the big. And the Rotterdam mentality suits me as well. Don't bullshit but clean up!"

What did you learn in Rotterdam?

"How much I love living in Rotterdam. Everything close by, lots to do, never rushing for ov to get home - and then it's cozy too! I enjoy everything the city has to offer. I have a Rotterdampas which gives me lots of discounts on outings and I like to go out with that. Do the touristy things. I suddenly find myself at the top of the Laurenskerk, or at the miniature golf course. Fun isn't it?"

Where should you be?

"If I were a freshman now, I would definitely take in all the events at the beginning of the academic year. And then join a study association or student sports club, then you quickly get to know people who find the same things interesting or fun. Once you know a few people, Rotterdam is like a village. Then you always run into acquaintances. For example in the Park near the Euromast, at Biergarten, in the Oude Haven ... Those are really the places where students come."

What should you really do (or not do) as a freshman?

"It's hard to get a room in Rotterdam. If you are still looking: register at Stadswonen and at Kamernet, and especially follow the Facebook group Kamers in Rotterdam! And if you live in Rotterdam soon, I have a silly but heartfelt tip: pay attention when cycling. I so often see people cycling on the wrong side of the road, on the Erasmus Bridge for example, and then almost getting hit by a scooter or something... If you're not from the big city, the traffic here can really take some getting used to."
