Why Rotterdam?
"When it became clear to me what I wanted to study, I just had to choose a city. I wanted to stay reasonably close to my childhood home, so Amsterdam, Leiden and Rotterdam remained. In the end I chose Rotterdam. First, because I felt very comfortable here. The city is fairly spaciously built, compared to Amsterdam and Leiden. This made me feel less oppressed. Second, it was close to my parental home and last, the university is centered in the campus. This means I don't have to go all over town and I also have contact with students from other faculties. In the end, I am extremely happy with my choice of Rotterdam. The city is super diverse in terms of activities such as food, art, museums, sports and shopping, as well as architecture and culture."
What did you learn in Rotterdam?
"I think independence anyway. Moving out, making new friends, studying, playing sports and taking care of yourself... That was all new of course! But you get used to it quickly and Rotterdam is a very nice city to live in. Plenty to see and do, the city has every convenience. Rotterdam is big and small at the same time. There is always something new to see or do and getting around is very easy. With a bike and your ov card you can be everywhere in no time."
Where should you be?
"After the corona period, I myself was looking for ways to get to know people. Usually, many students get to know each other through introduction week, but due to restrictions at the time, my introduction was shortened to one physical day. I myself did not feel much for a student union, because of the hazing and additional obligations. A friend then gave me the tip to join the student union or a sports club. I did both and am extremely happy with it. At the study association you have regular activities, where you can choose what you want to participate in or not. At the sports association, I am exercising weekly together with a team."
What should you really do (or not do) as a freshman?
"Register with City Housing as soon as possible! This is a housing association with housing specifically for students. It's really hard to find a room. So even if you think, 'I want to study from home for a while,' just sign up ahead of time. Of course you can hospiteren at student houses, I tried that too, but then you are in the race for every room with several others."
What will you do?
"Graduation! After my bachelor's, I will still go for a master's and once I am completely done I hope to continue working here in the neighborhood. I have since fallen in love with this city and would love to continue living here. The city gives every opportunity to be entrepreneurial after office hours. I would like to keep that."
