The Route

Michline's route begins in a café at a crucial crossroads in Michline's life: Café Verhip, Sint Jobsweg 21

The route ends in Rotterdam's finest safe haven, the Central Library on Hoogestraat 110

The length of the route is 5.81 kilometers

  1. Walk along the path to the right next to Verhip to the Westzeedijk.
  2. On your right you will see Podium Maas. There Michline teaches children.
  3. Cross at the traffic lights
  4. Turn left
  5. And walk along the Westzeedijk to the Kapelstraat
  6. Turn right into the Kapelstraat
  7. You come to the intersection with the Pieter de Hoochstraat
  8. On the left corner is the Theaterhavo, which used to be the Rotterdam Lyceum, Michelle's first step outside of Capelle aan den IJssel. Here Michline found the attention and care she had missed at home until then
  9. Now this building houses the Theatre High School and Michelle teaches there.
  10. Turn right into Pieter de Hoochstraat and you walk straight into the Theaterschool. There Michline discovered that there is a theater person in her.
  11. Turn left on Pieter de Hoochweg.
  12. You will pass the WMDC/Codarts/Stage Grounds at number 125,
  13. Across the street at number 108 is the Batavierenhuis. A workplace specifically for musicians, and to the left of the Batavierenhuis is the Batavierenpodium.
  14. Cross the bridge
  15. Cross Rochussenstraat and walk left along the water.
  16. On the corner with Heemraadssingel is the house where the artist Dora Dolz lived. There are a number of ceramic chairs in the city that she made.
  17. Walk along the Heemraadssingel,
  18. Cross the Nieuwe Binnenweg
  19. And you get to Mathenesserlaan.
  20. Turn right onto Mathenesserlaan.
  21. At the intersection with the 's-Gravendijkwal are two of Dora Dolz's colorful chairs.
  22. After the two chairs, turn left onto 's-Gravendijkwal.
  23. At number 68 is the Supernova Hotel. There, according to Michline, you drink the most delicious oat milk latte in the world.
  24. At number 58 sits Lab Grounds. It is the old HBS and it now houses artists who work there and can also show their work in the theater hall. You really have to keep an eye on the programming.
  25. Continue walking to the intersection and turn right onto 1st Middellandstraat.
  26. The 1st Middellandstraat becomes West Kruiskade.
  27. At the Kruisplein, turn left toward the Station.
  28. At No. 25, look up at Winne's mural.
  29. In 2018, JDL Street Art, or Judith de Leeuw, created a giant mural of Rotterdam rapper Winne on the Kruisplein. Winston Bergwijn (Paramaribo, April 20, 1978), better known as Winne, grew up in the Old West. He himself had to get used to the idea of seeing his head so big on a building, but he hopes to inspire and motivate others with it. De Leeuw spent a week working on the eight-story mural.
  30. On your right at No. 26 you will see Codarts. Music, dance and circus students learn their craft here.
  31. Walk on to the Stationsplein and stop for a moment at Moments Contained by Thomas J. Price. Along with many other Rotterdammers, Michline recognized herself in this image. A black young woman, with beautifully clenched fists, on an important spot in the city, where lots of people see her.
  32. Walk along the Weena to Hofplein and turn right onto Coolsingel.
  33. At the Meent turn left
  34. And then take the first right, the Red Sand.
  35. Walk on to the Hoogstraat and turn left. On the right side you will see the Rif010 surf bar and you can admire the surfers on the city waves.
  36. If you continue walking you will come to the Central Library.

The finest floor to find yourself and your peace back in the fifth.
